There are a lot of problems facing dogs and cats
today. Hundreds of thousands of unwanted dogs and cats are born every year.
Most of them inevitably wind up in a shelter. If they cannot be placed
in a home, they are destroyed. There are groups of people around the country
who work to save purebred dogs from euthanasia. When a purebred dog is
brought to a shelter, in many cases they call the local rescue organization
that is particular to that breed and release the dog to the organization.
These people perform a great service to the purebred dogs they care for,
and are sometimes the source of good adoptive dogs. However, many of the
dogs that come into their care suffer from poor breeding and socialization,
and are not good candidates for adoption. Sometimes the organization's
staff will overlook behavioral problems that would arise in an adopting
household, and their primary focus to save the dog's life keeps them from
being objective in their recommendations about adopting.
As long as you understand the bias of these groups
towards adoption of every dog, you can consider them as a potentially good
source of purebred dogs. If you are interested in their work, they are
always in need of volunteers and donors to help them with their work. Your
local animal shelter or humane society can help you find good local groups,
and there are many good resuce groups on the Internet as well.
